Frequently Asked Questions
Why is marble a good material for a mortar and pestle?
Marble is a dense, non-porous stone that provides the ideal grinding surface — hard enough to crush spices and garlic efficiently, smooth enough to clean easily, and heavy enough to stay stable during use. Unlike wood or ceramic, marble does not absorb flavours or odours, making it ideal for grinding a variety of ingredients without cross-contamination.
What can I grind in the Stone Grind mortar and pestle?
It works beautifully for garlic, whole spices (cumin, coriander, cardamom, peppercorns), fresh herbs, sea salt, dried chillies, and wet pastes like pesto or curry paste. The polished interior provides a clean, efficient grinding surface for both dry and wet ingredients.
How do I clean a marble mortar and pestle?
Hand wash with warm water and a stiff brush. Mild soap can be used occasionally. Do not soak in water or put in the dishwasher — prolonged water exposure can affect the stone over time. Dry thoroughly after washing. For a new mortar, grind a handful of dry rice first to remove any stone dust before first use.
Will the marble stain from spices like turmeric?
Strongly pigmented spices like turmeric can leave a temporary tint on lighter marble variants. This is normal and does not affect performance. A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water left for a few minutes can help lift staining on white marble.
Which marble variant is most versatile?
White Marble is the most classic and versatile — the dark grey veining gives it character while remaining neutral enough for any kitchen aesthetic. Pure White is the most minimal and striking. Dark Marble suits darker, more dramatic kitchen palettes and shows staining less visibly.
